Dorothy S. Benesh, 91, Menominee, died Oct. 6, 2010, at Rennes Health Care Center East.

She was born July 19, 1919, to the late Frank and Sophia (Luwen) Behnke in Duluth, MN. Dorothy graduated from Menominee High School in 1937, and received a certifi cation at the Cosmetology School in Green Bay. She worked at the Betty Beauty Shop. On Sept. 4, 1939, she married Francis Benesh at The Church of the Epiphany in Menominee. He preceded her in death in August of 1998. Together they owned and operated Benesh Electric Service for over 45 years. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and flowers. She also loved dogs. She was a member of Holy spirit Church, St. Anne's Sodality, the Menominee Historical Museum, and the Menominee Lady Elks.

She is survived by two sons, David (Heather) Benesh, Ripon, WI, and Steve (Margie) Benesh, Oshkosh; three daughters, Sally (Richard) Kirschmann, Waukesha, Mary (John) Thyne, North St. Paul, MN, and Carol (Steve) Hoff, Marinette; a sister, Lucille Seidl, Englewood, CO, 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Behnke.

Friends called at Holy Spirit Church where funeral service was held Oct. 9. Fr. Michael Chenier officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery. Memorials to the Menominee Historical Society appreciated. Thielen Funeral Home assisted the family.

James H. Gavin, 86, former resident of Menominee, died Sept. 25, 2010, at Mount Carmel Nursing Home, Milwaukee.

He was born Jan. 28, 1924, in Logansville, WI. James served in the United States Navy during WWII. He worked for Allis-Chalmers for 32 years, retiring in 1982. James married Marion (Barker) in Milwaukee, and they lived there for 37 years until moving to Menominee in 1988. They lived in Menominee for 19 years till they moved back to Milwaukee. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 146 and VFW Post No. 1887.

He is survived by three sons, James R. (Darline), Granite City, Il, Jerome (Maria), Cape Coral, FL, and Michael (Mary), Franklin, WI; two step-daughters, Carol Giefer, Greenfield, WI, and Mary Jo Chelstowski, Cudahy, WI, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents, three brothers; and one son, John D.

Funeral services were held Oct. 9 at the Cadieu Thielen Funeral Home. The Rev. Phil Tousley officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Menominee. A memorial fund has been established in Jim's name for First United Methodist Church, 601 10th Ave., Menominee, MI 49858.

Kenneth Jack Koetsier, 78, died Sept. 17, 2010, in Monroe, WI.

He was born Feb. 13, 1932, in Grand Rapids, MI. He is survived by six children, Theresa (Koetsier) Craig, Grand Rapids, Joe Koetsier, Farmington Hills, MI, Kenneth Paul Koetsier, Grand Rapids, Chris Koetsier, Grandville, Cathy (Koetsier) Bohlen, Bellville, MI, Pete Koetsier, Westland, MI; and former wife, Mary Koetsier, Farmington Hills, formerly of Stephenson.
Rev. Herbert Kolenda, Sr. PDF Print E-mail
Rev. Herbert David Kolenda, Sr., W5916 6.25 Lane, Menominee, died Oct. 4, 2010.

He was born March 5, 1929, to Rev. Paul L. Kolenda and Ella Lydia (Matschulat) Kolenda. He was the eighth son in a family of 10 sons in Royal Oak, MI, and spent most of his childhood in Clio, MI. He attended Central Bible Institute in Springfield, MO, and graduated with a three-year diploma in 1949. He was licensed to preach in 1950 by the Assembly of God and ordained in 1956. He served as pastor of five A/G churches in Gaylord, MI, Carlton, MI, St. Ignace, MI, Pound, WI, and Iron River, MI. He retired in 2005 after suffering strokes. He married Erma Clike of Petoskey, MI, Aug. 28, 1954.

He is survived by five of his nine brothers, John, Arnold (Char), Norman (Diane), Bob (Lorraine), and Billy (Mary); his wife; 10 children, Herb, Jr. (Melodee) Kolenda, Menominee, Lydia Kolenda, Greensboro, NC, Philip Kolenda, Iron River, Timothy Kolenda, Menominee, Ella (Stan) Bialik, Reynoldsville, OH, Lois (Timothy) English, Crestview, FL, Joy (Dave) Pellizzer, Iron River, Grace Kolenda, Iron River, Barak (Jenny) Kolenda, Ruther Glen, VA, and Drs. Jason (Melissa) Kolenda, Wesley Chapel, FL, and more than 20 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Louie, Ernie, Roland and Daniel and two grandchil dren.

Visitations were held at Lakeside Assembly of God, Menominee, River Church, Iron River, and Christian Life Center, Pound. Funeral service was held in Pound, Oct. 11. Rev. Kolenda's sons, Rev. Herb, Jr. and Philip were officiates. Rev. Jim Pellizzer hosted the memorial service in Iron River and Rev. Bill Otley hosted the funeral service in Pound. The family has suggested donations to the Herbert Kolenda, Sr. Memorial Fund. Anderson Kell Funeral Home assisted the family.

Rodney Phillip Loskot, 72, Daggett, died Oct. 8, 2010, at Roubal Care and Rehab Center.

Rodney was born Dec. 20, 1937, in Lake Township, to the late James and Mary (Palzewicz) Loskot. Rodney drove truck for Ruleau Brothers in Stephenson for many years. His passion was truck driving and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.

He is survived by one daughter, Bill Jo Boucher, Menominee and her mother, Patricia Bergstrom also of Menominee; grandson, Joshua Boucher, Menominee; great-grand daughter, Elizabeth Ann Furst; sister, Dorothy Kruhmin, Stephenson; and two brothers, Bernie of Las Vegas, NV and John of Menominee.

In keeping with Rodney's wishes, private family ser vices were held. Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson, assisted the family with arrangements.

Clint Cody Roberts, 20, 1425 11th Road, Bark River, died Oct. 10, 2010, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle/deer accident.

He was born Dec. 5, 1989, in Port Washington, WI, son of Thomas and Alice (Rathbone) Roberts. In 1993, his family moved to Florida for three years and then relocated to Bark River. He graduated with honors from Bark River-Harris High School in 2008. During his high school years, he was active in football and band. Clint was currently attending the police academy at Northern Michigan University. He worked for his dad as a butcher and deer processor at Tom's Market in Carney. His plan was to enter into the National Guard next year as a chief warrant officer and to become a helicopter pilot. He was a member of the Bark River Bible Church when he was younger, and was active in A.W.A.N.A. He enjoyed cleaning and repairing his guns, playing guitar and snowboarding. He loved riding his motorcycle and hanging out with his friends.

 He is survived by his parents; sister, Kaelee Roberts, Bark River; brother, Dylan Roberts, Bark River; maternal grandmother, Bobbie Ann Rathbone, Newport, TN, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Dolphas Rathbone; paternal grandparents, Hubert and Elsie Roberts, two uncles and an aunt.

Visitation will be held Oct. 14, beginning at 2 p.m. EST, at the Bark River Bible Church with the funeral service to follow at 6 p.m. EST, with Rev. Bradley Cochrane officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Gardens of Rest Cemetery. The Crawford Funeral Homes are assisting the family with arrangements.

Ralmond Joseph (RJ) Smiltneek, 88, Stephenson and Wauwatosa, WI, died Oct. 6, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

RJ was born Aug. 21, 1922, in Bagley, MI. He served as a flight engineer in the Pacific Theater of WWII on a B-29 Superfortress. It was there that he earned an Air Medal and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He graduated in 1951 from Marquette University with a degree in engineering which he put to good use as the founder of Uniplex Corporation in Pewaukee, WI. He and his wife raised 10 children in a home that he built in Butler, WI. He had 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchil dren.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Jasper) Smiltneek; his children, Carol Smiltneek, Milwaukee, Catherine (Myles) Hopper, Shorewood, WI, Martin (Cheryl) Smiltneek, Oconomowoc, WI, Andrew (Linda) Smiltneek, Neenah, Margaret (Martin) Kausalik, Pewaukee, WI, Marcia (Bob Taylor) Smiltneek, Plantation, FL, Gregory (Julie) Smiltneek, Menomonee Falls, WI, Lawrence (Catherine) Smiltneek, Salt Lake City, UT, Anthony (Sandra) Smiltneek, Butler, WI, and Gerald (Rose) Smiltneek, Sussex, WI, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; two brothers, Patrick Smiltneek, Stephenson, and Norbert Smiltneek, Franklin, WI; and two sisters, Dorothy Ann (John) Materna, Oconomowac, and Helene Smiltneek, Menominee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Charlotte (Hubbard) Smiltneek; and a sister, Berniece Hayes.

Visitation was held at Anderson Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson. Mass of Christian Burial was cele brated Oct. 11, at Precious Blood Catholic Church, Stephenson. Father Corey Litzner officiated. Interment followed in Stephenson Township Cemetery.
