Joyce Weng, 87, died Oct. 9, 2009, in Tempe, AZ.

Joyce married Roger Weng Aug. 14, 1944. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1998, after 53 years of marriage.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura, Gilbert, AZ; two sons, Bruce (Leslie), Tucson, AZ and Brian, Las Vegas, NV; one granddaughter, Shannon, Las Vegas, NV.

Judith H. Solander, 89, Stephenson, died Oct. 23, 2009, at home.

Judith Helen Bergquist was born Nov. 17, 1919, to the late Henry and Ellen (Johnson) Bergquist in Stephenson (Palestine). Judy attended local schools, graduating from Stephenson High School. In 1942 she graduated from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor's degree in education and then went on to complete her master's degree at the University of Michigan. Judy married Leland Morton in 1943 and he would precede her in death in 1946. She then married Fredolph (Peanuts) Solander, Nov. 20, 1954, at Bethlehem Covenant Church. He preceded her in death June 14, 2000.

Judy taught school in Harrisville, MI, for one year and at Stephenson for 39 years. After retiring from teaching, she worked in the family business, Solander Electric. Judy was a member of the Michigan Retired Teachers' Association and American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 43 of Stephenson. She was also a member of Bethlehem Covenant Church where she was actively involved with the Ladies Aid. Judy joined the Bethlehem Covenant Church  in 1938 and was currently the longest surviving member of the church. Judy loved cooking, gardening, shopping, reading cookbooks, grocery shopping and most of all being a grandmother and great-grandmother.

Judy is survived by four sons, Dennis (Bobbi) Morton, David (Doc), Mark (Joan) and John (Beth) all of Stephenson; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Edwin (Dorothy), Grant and Stanley Bergquist, nieces, nephews and friends. Judy is also survived by a special friend Joan Houseman of Traverse City.
Judy was preceded in death by brothers Harold and Glenn.

Visitation was held at Anderson-Diehm Funeral Home, Stephenson. Funeral was held at the Bethlehem Covenant Church Oct. 27. Burial followed in Bethlehem Covenant Church Cemetery. Reverend Andrew Stonina officiated. Pall-bearers were Scott and Matthew Havelka, Barry, Bruce and Dale Bergquist and Cody Woods.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Lottie (Ciszewski) Smotucha, 83, formerly of Wallace died Oct. 20, 2009, at Bay Area Medical Center.

Lottie was born June 21, 1926, in Menominee, to the late Frank and Anne (Markiewicz)Ciszewski. On Nov. 9, 1946, Lottie married Joe Smotucha at St. Mary' Mission in Sobieski. Joe preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 2004. She and Joe made their home in the Wallace area residing there for over 50 years. Lottie loved family, friends, music and dance. She and Joe frequented many a dance hall in their younger years, often joining in the music making. Lottie did catering. She was employed at Fish Net & Twine in Menominee for many years. After retirement, she conducted product demonstrations at Angeli's. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Birch Creek, MI.

Lottie is survived by three daughters, Yvonne (Mark) Paris, Kathleen (Barry) Bergquist both of Menominee and Marian (Randy) Schiesser, LaCrosse, WI; one son, Leroy (Theresa), Stephenson, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Melody Peterson and Peggy Smotucha; one sister, Irene Slawinski, Menominee, sisters-in-law, Janet Morris and Ann Ciszewski; nieces and nephews.
Lottie was preceded in death by one son, Allen; brothers, Anthony, John, Bill and Stanley; and sister, Haddie.

Family and friends called at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church Birch Creek where Mass of Christian Burial was held Oct. 23. Father Joseph Vandannoor officiated. Anderson Diehm Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
Marie Salfai PDF Print E-mail
Marie A. Salfai, 88, Menominee, died Oct. 20, 2009, at Rennes Health Center-East.

She was born July 27, 1921, in Menominee, to the late John and Josephine (Evrard) Brault.

Marie attended St. Ann Grade School (Menominee Catholic Central). She graduated form Lourdes High School when she was 16, received her teaching certificate from Northern Michigan Normal College (Northern Michigan University) and began teaching grade school in a two-room schoolhouse in Birch Creek, at the age of 18. Jo Salfai proposed to Marie on Nov. 9, 1943, while on leave from the Army. After Joe was wounded in battle on Sept. 13, 1944, in Italy, he recuperated for almost a year at a Chicago hospital. She worked at Scott Foresman Publishing in Chicago until Joe was released from the hospital. They were married Sept. 22, 1945, at St. Ann Parish in Menominee. He preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1991.

After their marriage, Joe and Marie moved to Lower Michigan. Upon returning to Menominee, Marie substitute taught at Arthur Bay School.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer Church, the Altar Society and a past president of St. Ann's PTA. She was also a member of the DAV Auxiliary and a registered Democrat. She played the piano and sang in church choirs and at weddings.

Marie is survived by six sons, Michael (Michelle), Peshtigo, James (fiancé Sharon Everson), Marinette, Joseph (Cheryl), Menominee, Peter, Irving, TX, Paul (Laura), Marquette, and William (Amy), Midland, MI; five daughters, Mary Jo Salfai, Menominee, Patricia (Harold) Kaufman, Loomis, WI, Susan (James) Hipke, Peshtigo, Jeannie (Ron) Hair , Richardson, TX and Gabrielle Salfai-Hipke (fiancé Steve Nelson), Marinette, 28 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Elizabeth; brothers, Percy and George; sisters, Amanda (Sister Josephine), Bernice, Irene, Gladys and Mary Elizabeth (Betsy); a foster brother, Tom Burke and four infant siblings.

Friends called at Resurrection Church where a Funeral Mass was held Oct. 23 with the Rev. Michael Chenier officiating.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
Memorials to Menominee Catholic Central would be appreciated.

Lucas Lawrence Savord, 75, Hermansville, died Oct. 22, 2009, at home following a lengthy illness. He was born Nov. 24, 1933, in Faithorn, MI.

He retired from American Can Company, Chicago where he worked for 36 years.

He is survived by his brother, Wilfred J. (Helen) Savord, Hermansville; sisters, Rose Ann Nelson, Norway, and Edna (Alan) Pickle, Stephenson; companion, Mary Beth Savord, Hermansville, three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his children, Deanna Lynn Savord and Lawrence E. Savord; parents, William J. (Marcella Gibour) Savord of Faithorn; brother, Rev. William R. Savord; sisters, Anna Mae (George) Zuhn); Mary Jane (Jeanette) (John) Skuja; and brother-in-law, Robert E. Nelson.

In keeping with Lucas' wishes, he will be cremated. A graveside service will be held at Faithorn River Cemetery Oct. 30 at 11:30 a.m. CDT with Rev. Michael Vichich officiating.

Gabriel E. Mouford, 94, Carney, died Oct. 19, 2009, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility, Powers.

He was born Jan. 23, 1915, in Dykesville, WI, to the late Emil and Selina (Ducat) Mouford. He married Elaine LaFave June 30, 1945, in Spalding. She preceded him in death in 1980. He farmed and worked for the Stephenson Marketing in Nadeau. He was a member of St. Bruno's Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by one daughter, Marie (Neal) Prodzinski, Oak Creek, WI; two sons, Norbert and Stephen (Pauline), both of Carney, two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one great-grandchild and seven step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Flaum and three brothers, John, Orville and Henry.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Oct. 22 at 12 noon at St. Bruno's Catholic Church, Nadeau. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time. Father Michael Vichich will officiate.
Burial will be in Nadeau Township Cemetery.

Deborah Miller, 61, Menominee, died Oct. 26, 2009.

Deborah was born to the late William and Kathryn (Abrams) Cutliff, in Byron, MI. She grew up in the rural Durand, MI, area on Miller Road and graduated from Byron High School, Class of 1966. She worked for General Telephone and was a police, fire and ambulance dispatcher for sic years at the city of Durand.

Oct. 28, 1972, Debbie married James A. Miller at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand. They moved to Manistique where she worked for State Savings Bank. In 1975 the couple moved to Iron Mountain where she worked for 1st National Bank. In 1980 the family moved to Marquette where she worked for the cashier's office at Northern while taking accounting classes. The family has resided in Menominee since 1987. Deb is a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and former choir member, often singing solo the Litany of the Saints. She was the bookkeeper at Menominee Catholic Central School for eight years and the payroll specialist and handled accounts receivable for Enstrom Corp. since 1999. Debbie served as Honor Queen in Job's Daughters during high school. She enjoyed her home, the UP of Michigan, the woods, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. She loved Loons and animals. Debbie enjoyed music, cooking, needlework, reading and family camping trips, computer games, Maroon and Packers football.  Deb was part of Maroon Band Boosters. Deb valued time with family and friends.

Deborah is survived by her husband Jim, Menominee; daughter, Alison and Todd Marshall, Jackson, MI; one granddaughter; one sister, Patricia Taylor, Moriarity, N.M; mother-in-law Betty Miller, Menominee, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held  Oct. 28, at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Menominee, MI from 4:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with Deacon Charles Schumacher officiating. Visitation will also be Oct. 30 from 9:30 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Durand, with Father J. Munley officiating. Burial will be in Union Plains Cemetery, Burns Township, MI.
Memorial fund has been established for Menominee Catholic Central School.

Milo J. Hruska, 95, died Oct. 22, 2009, at Rennes Health Center West.

He was born in Menominee to the late Louis and Marie (Dlouhy) Hruska July 19, 1914.

He graduated from Menominee High School in 1932. Milo married Sophie Adesko Oct. 5, 1940, in Marinette. She preceded  him in death Dec. 18, 2007. He worked for Signal Electric, King Seeley, Vernco and for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 15 years. He was a member of Resurrection Church and belonged to the Retired Mail Carriers and the Bohemian Lodge.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

He is survived by two sons, Richard (Linda) Hruska, Menominee, and Earl Hruska, Porterfield; two grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Wava, Menominee; brother, Stanley (Lorraine) Hruska, Redford, MI, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Godfrey and Frank; and a sister, Mary Zoellner.

Friends called at Resurrection Church where Funeral Mass was held Oct. 28. The Rev. Robb Jurkovich officiated.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

Anthony Nicholas Cozzone, Sr., 24, born Sept. 9, 1985, formerly of Menominee, died suddenly Oct. 16, 2009, at Loyola University Hospital in Maywood, IL.

He is survived by his fiancee Shawna Bell, daughter of David and Sheryl Bell, Wallace. He is the father of Anthony, Jr., and Benjamin. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Services were held Oct. 20, at Kopicki Heritage Funeral Home.
He was buried Oct. 21 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, IL.

Caden M. Clifford, 2, 825 S. 26th St., No. 602, Escanaba, died Oct. 18, 2009, in his sleep.

He was born July 3, 2007, in Iron Mountain, the son of Kurt Beyer and Casey Clifford.

With his family, Caden attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bark River.

He is survived by his mother, Casey Clifford, Escanaba; father, Kurt Beyer, Menominee; brothers, Cameron and Christian Clifford, Escanaba; maternal grandparents, Bernard and Cheryl (Mott) Clifford, Wilson; maternal great-grandparents, Ray and Elorine Mott, Perronville; paternal grandmother, Christine Denmith, Menominee.
Caden was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Bernard Clifford, Sr.; great-uncles, Ray and Ted Mott; and cousin, Bobby Mileski.

Visitation was held at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Bark River. The Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 23 at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Bark River, with Rev. Allen Mott officiating.
Burial was in St. Michael's Cemetery, Perronville.

Kay (Toot) M. Alguire, 65, Menominee, died Oct. 24, 2009, at Menominee Care Center.

She was born July 25, 1944, to the late Herbert G. and Arlene (Ziehm) Barstow in Marinette.

She married John (Tom) Alguire April 14, 1978, in Menominee. He preceded her in death June 24, 2009. She had worked cleaning schools for 15 years, and then as a caregiver with home health.

She loved going to the casino and playing the slots.

She is survived by three sons, Bruce (Sarah) Barstow, Jackson, Jeffrey (Tammy) Barstow, Port Edwards and Richard Alguire, formerly of Menominee; three grandchildren; sister-in-law, Barbara Barstow, Menominee; three brothers, Herbert, Jr. (Joyce) Barstow, Marinette, Robert Barstow, Madison, and Donald (Margaret) Barstow, Menominee; three sisters, Louise Johnson, Menominee, Jean (Ronald) Bundy, Cedarburg, and MaryAnn William, Albuquerque, NM.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Dallas; two sisters, Sandy and Linda; and a brother-in-law, Charles.

Visitation will be held at Thielen Funeral Home Oct. 30 from 4 to 6 p.m.
